Urine drug testing remains one of the most widely used and trusted methods for workplace drug testing in New Zealand. It provides a longer detection window than other testing methods, making it well suited for pre-employment, random and post-incident testing across a wide range of industries.
When carried out correctly, urine testing offers reliable, defensible results that stand up to scrutiny. That’s why proper training is essential. Training ensures tests are conducted consistently, specimens are handled correctly and results meet the requirements of the relevant workplace standards.
NZQA Drug Testing for Workplaces
Training staff in correctly performing a urine drug screening test in your workplace is crucial. We can put you in touch with NZQA accredited training providers to deliver training sessions all over New Zealand to help you with this. See our different course options below.
In these courses, you will be trained to collect urine for drug testing in accordance with the joint AS/NZS 4308:2023 Standard.
The following NZQA credits are required for urine workplace drug testing:
- Unit Standards 25511: Perform urine drug screening in the workplace
- Unit Standard 25458: Perform urine specimen collection in the workplace for drug testing
Virtual Training – ProMed
These courses are held as a half day course over Zoom. Courses have pre-course material to complete. They are interactive and run with a small group so there is plenty of help available throughout the session. You will come away with a far greater understanding of the processes and logic behind workplace urine drug testing. The credits received do not need renewing or updating, they are for life, however refresher courses are recommended.

This course is run by ProMed (a registered PTE) and facilitated by Sober Check. It costs $550 + GST per attendee for enrolment.
Cancellations, Substitutions and No-Shows
You can change or cancel an enrolment up to 10 working days before the course starts with no charge.
After this point, the full course fee will apply for:
- Late cancellations
- Late substitutions
- No-shows
Payment Terms
Invoices are payable by the 20th of the month following the invoice date. Overdue accounts may be charged interest at 2.5% per month until payment is received.

Virtual + Face2Face Training – Sue Nolan | Drug free Sites
Both classroom and virtual courses by Zoom are held as full day courses, and are run in association with Besafe Workplace Training PTE.
Whilst there is no pre-course material to complete, students are required to read some sections of the relevant Australian/New Zealand Workplace Standard. For new students, they are also required to complete a post course practice test in their workplace to consolidate the learnings.

Urine Refresher Training
Regular refresher training helps ensure your workplace urine testing remains consistent and compliant. Over time, small process shortcuts can creep in, standards can change and confidence can drop. An external refresher keeps your team aligned with current procedures while reinforcing best practices and ultimately reduces the risk of errors.
Our refresher courses are designed for certified testers who want to maintain accuracy, strengthen documentation processes and stay confident in their role.
Virtual Urine Refresher Training – Sober Check
Sober Checks’ Virtual Urine Fluid Refresher Training is delivered via Zoom, on a date and time that suits your business and your team. It is specific to the urine drug testing product your workplace uses.
- Sessions are two hours in duration.
- The cost is $200 + GST per person.
- No equipment is supplied however if this is required we will charge $50 per person.
Please note that no NZQA units will be awarded for this course as it is refresher training.
In-person Urine Refresher Training Course
Sober Checks’ In-person Urine Refresher Training is delivered face to face at your site or workplace, on a date and time that suits your business. It is specific to the urine drug testing product your workplace uses.
- There is a minimum number of 6 and a maximum of 12 in one session.
- Sessions are two hours in duration which can be delivered to suit shift work and nationwide locations.
- The cost is $450 + GST per person.
- No equipment is supplied however if this is required we will charge $50 per person.
Please note that no NZQA units will be awarded for this course as it is refresher training.
